Winners of the Alice Springs Sunchase Model Solar Car event are eligible to compete in the National Challenge and their travel to the National Championships subsidised.

Depending upon interest, there is generally also a kit car "Mini Challenge" race. This is meant for those students keen on having a bit of fun with easier to build kit solar cars. Additionally, Alice Springs hosts a Model Solar Boat race!

Overall Sunchase Goal
Students design and build model solar cars that have to cope with slopes, cornering
and speeds of up to 20kph as they race each other to the finish line on a specially
designed track, without hurting the driver (an egg)! Also, competitors are able to
compete in building and racing Solar Model Boats.

The competition gives students an exciting introduction to designing and building a car powered only by the sun. On the way they learn about science and engineering, as well as developing workshop and teamwork skills.

Support materials are available for teachers and workshops and can be held at your
school. Civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers, and members of Engineers Australia, will be on tap to provide assistance to the students.

HERE ARE ALSO SOME PICTURES FROM PRIOR SUNCHASE CHALLENGES.
